Food for?

V23 n28

1 Corinthians 6:13, Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. KJV

1 Corinthians 6:13 Food of all kinds is meant for the stomach, and the stomach is meant for food, and God will cause both of them to perish. (Weymouth translation)

[Meats for the belly] I suppose that koilia  (grk 2836) means the animal appetite, or propensity to food, etc., and we may conceive the apostle to reason thus: I acknowledge that God has provided different kinds of aliments for the appetite of man, and among others those which are generally offered to idols; and he has adapted the appetite to these aliments, and the aliments to the appetite: but God shall destroy both it and them; none of these is eternal; all these lower appetites and sensations will be destroyed by death, and have no existence in the resurrection body; and the earth and its productions shall be burnt up. (from Adam Clarke Commentary)

Most often when people hear the word food, their mind will usually think about or envision their next meal or a snack for their physical body. Seldom, will their thoughts be about spiritual food.

Ecclesiastes 6:7, All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled. KJV

Eccl 6:7, “ A man toils on to satisfy his hunger, but his wants are never met.” (Moffatt translation)

[All the labour of man] This is the grand primary object of all human labour; merely to provide for the support of life by procuring things necessary. And life only exists for the sake of the soul; because man puts these things in place of spiritual good, the appetite-- the intense desire after the supreme good-- is not satisfied. When man learns to provide as distinctly for his soul as he does for his body, then he will begin to be happy, and may soon attain his end. (from Adam Clarke Commentary)

In the world one at times will hear the expression “food for thought”. Yet, what is it that one spends most of their time thinking on? What is it that occupies or controls one thoughts throughout the day?

Matthew 4:4, But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. KJV

[But he answered and said, It is written <Deut. 8:3>, Man shall not live by bread alone]-- more emphatically, as in the Greek, `Not by bread alone shall man live'--

[But by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.] Of all passages in Old Testament scripture, none could have been pitched upon more apposite, perhaps not one so apposite, to our Lord's purpose. "The Lord led thee (said Moses to Israel, at the close of their journeyings) these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only," etc. `Now, if Israel spent, not 40 days, but 40 years in a waste, howling wilderness, where there were no means of human subsistence, not starving, but divinely provided for, on purpose to prove to every age that human support depends not upon bread, but upon God's unfailing word of promise and pledge of all needful providential care, am I, distrusting this word of God, and despairing of relief, to take the law into my own hand? True, the Son of God is able enough to turn stones into bread: but what the Son of God is able to do is not the present question, but what is Man's duty under want of the necessaries of life. And as Israel's condition in the wilderness did not justify their unbelieving complainings and frequent desperation, so neither would mine warrant the exercise of the power of the Son of God in snatching despairingly at unwarranted relief. As man, therefore, I will await divine supply, nothing doubting that at the fitting time it will arrive. (from Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary)

What food is it that you seek this day?

 That you may know Him,

In the service of Jesus Christ.
